Autumn Comes

With the advent of the fall equinox, I feel energized. The same happens in the spring for me. They are by far my favorite seasons. The long, seemingly endless days of both winter and summer can weigh on you. The endless chores, the heat, the cold. But then the weather shifts. In the spring, it starts to warm, the longer days and the sunshine on your face remind you that easier days are ahead. And now, in the fall, after a long, hot, dry summer full of frustrations, the crisp air renews me a little. Fall is very much not the end of my season. It is only the end of fresh flowers. There is considerable work to be done this fall especially.

First, we are starting a whole new field for our new peonies and it will also be the location of all of our dahlias next season. That means we will be digging nearly 1,000 tubers this fall!

Next, we'll need to tend to our first and established peony field. We will need to cut all of the plants down and amend the soil to feed them for great blooms next year. We still have spots available in our Peony Planting Workshop if you want to learn more and grow some of your own peonies!! I’m conjuring up a yummy fall cocktail to sip on while we chat peonies and tour the farm. Check out our shop to sign up for some of the last spots!

We have already started planting for spring of 2023. Ang direct seeded those varieties that thrive in that way of planting and they are coming up so well. She did it all into nice fresh beds. She also started planting our seedlings of camanula, foxglove, bells of Ireland, feverfew, and many more.

After all is prepped and planted out in the field. We'll tend to our 1,000 dahlias. We need to clean, split, and store tubers for our 2023 crop. It is a serious undertaking and I like to get it done before winter gets too cold. In the mean time, it has not frosted yet and I’m quite thankful because I’m STILL labeling. They are taking me foreverrrrrr. There has got to be a better way. My field map is completely saving me!

In the middle of fall prep, we'll have our Peony Workshop. Then as November rounds out we'll start our Wreath Workshops in the barn!! I love fall!

Cheers to a new season! Hope to see you at a workshop!
